I’m pleased to announce that last Friday we launched a new audio podcast unlike any you’ve heard. “F-Stop Beyond: A Journey into the Heart of the Visual Artist.” I like to call this “Fresh Air” for photographers (although we’ll interview filmmakers and videographers from time to time as well). I got the idea because I was seeing so many forums and podcasts where top photographers are interviewed and/or field questions where the topics are primarily business related: What lenses do you use? How do you charge your prices? What’s your workflow? Canon or Nikon? Aperture or Lightroom? etc. However, after having interviewed and worked with a number of these artists, or hearing them speak at conferences we’ve video taped (like WPPI and Pictage’s PartnerCon), I was hearing so many more interesting stories that had nothing to do with branding, business, talent, or technique.
So, in true Ron Dawson fashion, I started our own podcast so that I could hear the stories that were getting overlooked. Stories about their childhood, their friendships, their philosophies on life, etc. Little known facts about them that gives us insight into who they are as people, as opposed to what they can teach us about business. As a visual artist myself, I know that these more personal stories have a huge impact on my art. As a filmmaker, you can’t escape your past (or present). It will show itself somehow in your work. I have to know that’s true for photographers as well. F-Stop Beyond is about hearing those stories.
F-STOP ON FRIDAYS
Our inaugural episode aired last Friday and our guests were Dane Sanders and Jasmine Star. If you’re in the California wedding photography scene, you’ll most likely know of these two well-respected, Orange County photographers. If you don’t know them, listen to the show and get to know them. Their stories are remarkable. Then, tune in every Friday for another intriguing interview. In the coming weeks we’ll have Jules Bianchi, Sara France, the LaCour couples Mark Adams and Erin Reed Adams, as well Rachel and Andrew Niesen, Rob Evans, Ryan Joseph, and more. (Later this week I’ll also post segment 2 from last week’s episode I haven’t had time to post, an interview with indie filmmaker JD Cochran.)
Stay tuned to the conversation. Click here to subscribe to the F-Stop Beyond blog.
